Texas radio used to be cool years ago when FM stations like KISS would play an entire side of Pink Floyd or KZEW played all the long versions and maybe some lost tracks you’ve never heard. It was called progressive country or rock, underground FM or pirate radio.
A big influence came from KEXL, who were doing really innovative things at the station, and whose format came to be known as Album Rock. Whatever name you call it, it was cool and it was exciting to listen to. So exciting in fact, that listening late at night inspired me to later become a DJ and work in radio.
A new FM station went on the air in Dallas last year and surprised me how good it is. It’s called Lone Star 92.5 and they’re playing the strangest music mix of outlaw country and rock and roll, including Lynyrd Skynyrd, the Eagles, Stones, Black Crowes, CCR, John Hiatt, Neil Young, Eric Clapton, Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers, Doyle Bramhall, and Willie Nelson. There’s lots more, I just can’t remember them all right now.
But it just goes to show that the Texas music scene is alive and well in many places, and these links prove it…
