From the Rhino Records June Newsletter @ www.rhino.com:
ATLANTIC RECORDS’ 60th ANNIVERSARY
The late Ahmet Ertegun founded Atlantic Records in 1947, and within a decade the company had become the country’s preeminent R&B label.
Rhino will celebrate the influential imprint’s 60th anniversary with several releases beginning this month. The new documentary American Masters - Atlantic Records: The House That Ahmet Built recently premiered on PBS and is now available on DVD. And the latest Rhino Handmade limited edition pays tribute to the music that started it all; the 4-CD box set Atlantic Blues 1949-1970 is now on sale at www.rhinohandmade.com
Rhino has got to be one of the coolest record labels on the planet. Some of their collectible packaging is really creative, like this Monkees DVD set of the band’s first television season. This is classic music TV on DVD. Some say they created the first ever music videos, but I think the Beatles did it first. The Monkees were the U.S. version of the Beatles, and they were the first band with a regular TV series. Guitarist Michael Nesmith later became a pioneer in the music video & multimedia industry.
