Eric Clapton opened his North American Tour last week in Dallas. I was fortunate to get tickets at the last minute to this sold out show. Too bad it was at American Airlines Center, which has terrible acoustics for live music. The sound was awful, but the band was red hot, and ripped through a two hour performance.
I haven’t seen Clapton live on stage since his Crossroads Guitar Festival in 2004 at the Dallas Cotton Bowl. But then and now, he is a real music icon who has stayed true to his roots, keeping the blues alive for generations.
Another cool thing about slowhand is his willingness to work with younger musicians, like Doyle Bramhall II and Derek Trucks, who played second and third guitars at the show. That’s a great lineup right there, but the opener Robert Cray came out for the last encore, “Crossroads,” and they just tore it up with four guitars.
